Newcomers
Welcoming New Arrivals to Athens

What is Newcomers?

HOME

NEWCOMERS is informal group of women from around the world that offers a support system to new arrivals in northern Athens through a network of services, advice, information and help. Our group is informal -- there is no executive, and there are no membership fees. There are, however, small fees at the general meeting and at some special events to cover miscellaneous costs.

The group is social in nature but offers much more. The activities we offer help the newcomer explore their new world and make new friends along the way. We give people an opportunity to quickly learn about and cope with the practical side of living in Greece. The most important function of the group is to stimulate communication and help each other.

To do this, Newcomers organizes many varied and diverse events. The main meeting is the second Wednesday of each month, and everyone is welcome. At these meetings, new people are introduced, announcements are made and activity sign-up sheets are posted. Also available is our monthly newsletter which details all the events for the coming month.

In addition to the monthly meeting, there are many other regular activities and special events.

The Recommended Services Book, published by Newcomers, is a compilation of member-recommended, English-speaking services in Athens. This book is useful not only to the new arrival but also to the old hand living in Greece. It has contacts for household repairs, doctors, dentists, pet-care, housing and moving, catering and beauty needs and many more. It is an outstanding, information-packed book which is sold for a minimal cost.

Newcomers has a network of mothers with pre-school children who meet and exchange babysitting favors and hints for living in Greece. Any new arrival is encouraged to come to their first meeting with their child to meet the other mothers and receive helpful information. Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring children along to every meeting, but Newcomers can provide information on baby-sitting to those who need it.

Although there is no executive, we do have a few leaders who organize and coordinate meetings, arrange food and coffee equipment, publish newsletters and telephone lists and provide help when needed.

The "Team Work" is what makes NEWCOMERS possible.
