A GUIDED TOUR OF THE ATHENIAN ACROPOLIS

posted Nov 5, 2019, 10:03 PM by Newcomers Bulletin Board

THE FRIENDS OF THE

AUSTRALIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE AT ATHENS

PRESENT A GUIDED TOUR OF

THE ATHENIAN ACROPOLIS

to be conducted by Dr Stavros Paspalas

on SATURDAY 23rd November 2019

The Acropolis has long been the focal point of Classical archaeology, indeed of the history of ancient Greece. Its buildings, even in their ruinous state, have been deemed by many as the most perfect distillation of Greek culture. But has it always been so? What was on the Acropolis before the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Nike were built? What did the Athenians think they were doing when they built them? What did they do with them? And what is that collection of marble architectural elements opposite the east façade of the Parthenon? All these questions, and more, will be addressed on the tour. And, as an added extra, we have been granted permission to enter the Parthenon!

As numbers are limited it is absolutely necessary that all those intending to participate book.

Cost:                Members          Euros 20                      Guests              Euros 25

We shall meet at 11 am in front of the ticket issuing office just below the entrance of the Acropolis.
