Daily Life – Housing – Telephones

Only look at properties with telephones installed and listed on the lease, unless this isn't an important consideration for you. OTE now guarantees you a new telephone in operation within 30 days and promises a refund on your 30,000drs installation charge if they fail!  (I don’t know of anyone who has been in a position to try this – so no comment!)

The 2001 OTE telephone line includes apparatus, installation and repairs.  You own the line, but not the number and you can take it with you anywhere - provided there is a spare line in that area

When making a phone call, note that the cost of calls overseas is high.  Local calls are standard 10.5drs per minute with the cheaper rate 10.5drs for two minute only between 2200 and 0800hrs daily (or nightly) and all day Sunday.  Calls to Mobile Phones are charged at per minute  (Bills are usually two monthly.) for the first line and an extra charge if an itemised bill is requested. (This is only available for Digital lines and must be applied for.)

Telephone cards are available at kiosks but watch the English language press (Herald Tribune/Kathimerini daily and Athens News weekly) for updates on comparative charge rates for calls.  Some will offer cheaper local calls and others discount the long distance and/or overseas calls.  OTE was recently cited as the most expensive card across the board, even more than its own landlines!
