Medical:  Medical care is provided by the public health system (ESY).  There is also a large private system of medicine with their own hospitals and doctors.   All doctors, diagnostic centers and medical facilities expect to be paid before the service in cash although many now take credit cards.  Generally, the medical training is good but one must be selective in seeking care.  For a list of doctors or dentists one can refer to The Newcomers’ Recommended Service Book, call their respective embassies or the best way is to ask friends for a medical recommendation.

Pharmacies:  Most medicines can be purchased over the counter and pharmacists are informed.  Most pharmacies are closed on the weekends. Pharmacies open on the weekend are listed in the newspapers and by a sign in all pharmacies windows.

Diagnostic Centers:  In Greece, all medical tests and x-rays are done at private centers.  The patient is responsible for making appointments, picking up test results, informing the doctor and keeping the information for further reference.  One is expected to pay before the test is performed.  Your doctor will recommend a center or you can walk in to most centers without an appointment for routine tests.
