Dear all,
Are you ready for our new adventure ?
here are some words as an introduction by our beloved Martina Anagnostou who is going to be our guide of our next - very special - outing on December 7th.

In the midst of Christmas carols and flickering season lights celebrating the birth of Christ let us delve into another contrasting and yet very surprisingly familiar world, the world of the Museum of  Islamic Art of Athens.

Let us go on a journey to understand a different story by visiting the Museum of  Islamic Art tucked next to the Kerameikos ancient cemetery and the perfectly intact temple of Hephaestus. Let us discover something human and spiritual about this religion that has the absolute same roots as Judaism and Christianity, and has a philosophy and culture of fascinating diversity and richness. Martina our guide has lived in many countries, notably among them Pakistan, Sudan, Jordan and currently Tunisia all of which are officially muslim. This in combination with her art historical background, should make for an interesting journey.

Without images and concentrating almost exclusively on the written word, while at the same time covering a vast cultural landscape, Islam is the youngest of the three monotheistic religions dominating our planet. The Museum of  Islamic Art of Athens is housed in a striking neoclassical house build around archeological foundations that part part of the exhibit. The artifacts are primarily the collection of Antonis Benakis which he developed while living in Egypt. Let us delve into the world of swirling arabesque and sacred geometry to understand something more human and profound about the Islamic world.

The Islamic art collections of the Benaki Museum are housed in a complex of neoclassical buildingon
