Behind the Scenes

Some words from our volunteer team and how they got involved with Newcomers.

Chris Grant-Bear - Team Leader, Area Representative

I joined Newcomers in 2013, following my retirement from international education. I enjoy being part of a group that includes women who are long term foreign residents of Greece and women who are transient expatriates. Do take advantage of the many activities on offer - you can learn about this beautiful host country and make friends at the same time!

Di Drymoussis - Secretary & Area Representative

On returning to Athens after an absence of 13 years, I wanted to meet lots of new people and widen my horizons. Since joining Newcomers in April 2008, I have met so many wonderful and inspiring women from all over the world. Becoming a volunteer was the "icing on the cake".

Mary Kyritsis - Welcome Desk Organiser, Newsletter Advertisements & Activity Coordinator

When I retired from my job at Campion in 2000 I realized that in spite of living here since 1970 I knew very few English-speaking women. A friend took me to the Christmas luncheon in 2001 and I joined immediately – and immediately was given the job of Newsletter Editor, which certainly answered my wish. I don’t know what I’d have done all these years without the Newcomers group, such a friendly, busy, group full of great women, even though most of them do tend to go off somewhere else after awhile!

Rose Milward - Donations Coordinator

Having lived in Athens for 10 years in the 70’s and 80’s I returned 7 years ago and was not sure that I qualified as a ‘newcomer’!  However, on joining Newcomers, I soon discovered a mix of ‘old’ and ‘new’ from all over the world with a wide variety of interests and experiences.  This makes for lively social meetings once a month, activities to suit all tastes and the bonus of being able to support many worthwhile causes both locally and for those who find themselves seeking refuge on our shores.

Laura Liverakos - Meeting Facilitator

I joined Newcomers about 6 years ago and it has been invaluable in my life on so many levels. I am so grateful for all I received that I decided to become an area representative as well as a team volunteer.  Becoming a member of the volunteer team has allowed me to experience another dimension of Newcomers, one that gets lots of work done, in a team like and fun way!!!!

Annette Hadjis- Bulletin Board Administrator

Having recently retired from 26 years in full time employment in Athens, I found myself at a loose end and decided to join Newcomers in 2013, in the hope of making new friends and of finding activities to keep me busy. I was not disappointed; there is a plethora of activities and opportunities to meet many people from all walks of life. I was recently invited to join the volunteer team as Bulletin Board Co-Ordinator where I hope I will be able to put my many years’ experience to good use, for a very worthy cause.

Katerina Tsitsipi - Guided Tours & Activities Organiser

I think I have been with the Newcomers ... forever! More actively, for nearly 8 years. And now I have the privilege to be a member of this fabulous team of women. Over the years I have been involved in the planning of activities, guided tours, events, and everything that could make expats' lives easier and more pleasant. By joining this group, you can make new friends, exchange information, be actively involved in charities, and leave Greece...loving it!

Kathy Cambas - Meeting and Greeting & Lunch Bunch

A friend of mine started Newcomers in the 80s but I was never a member because I was not that new to Greece. Then, several years ago, my good friend Di Drymoussis invited me to a Newcomers Christmas Luncheon and then to one of the meetings where I found so many old friends and also met new ones. I joined at the beginning of 2012 and am so glad I did. Thanks, Di!

Pauline Zoulias - Welcome Desk (New Arrivals)

I joined Newcomers about 18months ago following my retirement from a British school in Athens. I have lived in Athens for 37 years so I am not a newcomer to Athens but I am a newcomer to living here without the support of belonging to a workplace. I have enjoyed meeting new people and joining in some of the activities on offer. I am looking forward to being able to contribute any ideas to the team.
